Drug Problems in Georgia

Cocaine is the primary drug of abuse and addiction in GA. By itself, cocaine made up over 11,000 admissions into Georgia drug rehabs in 2010, about 40% of its primary admissions. Coke addiction hits everyone hard, whether rich or poor, black or white. It’s available in both powder and rock form – powder cocaine in Atlanta’s many raves, nightclubs, and bars, and crack cocaine in more poor urban areas.

After cocaine, marijuana is the 2nd most abused illicit drug. It is followed closely by stimulants and prescription painkillers. Like many southern states, the manufacture, sale and distribution of methamphetamine continues to plague Georgia. From 2007 – 2009, meth lab seizures jumped up by 91%. As for pharmaceutical drugs, the most frequently abused is OxyContin, and hydrocodone, hydromorphone, and benzodiazepines as well. As pills are becoming more strictly regulated and harder to obtain, addicts are turning toward heroin more and more, both in Atlanta and in the rest of the state.
