Drug Addiction in Hawaii

Extremely potent strains of marijuana continue to be Hawaii’s most significant drug problem. Together with methamphetamine, this drug makes up the vast majority of reasons why people seek drug rehabs in the Aloha State. In 2010, marijuana alone accounted for about half of Hawaii’s drug rehab admissions. It is widely available and continues to be increasingly used by Hawaii’s juvenile population.

After marijuana, crystal methamphetamine (aka “crank” or “ice”) is the drug of choice in Hawaii and is considered to be the most significant drug threat within the state. It is both widely produced and used here. Pharmacies have begun reporting large-quantity purchases for pseudoephedrine, which is used as a precursor in meth production. Hawaii actually has the highest population of crystal meth users per capita.
