Drug Addiction in Maine

Maine’s problems with opiates are worse than any other drug by a very significant margin. Opiates, which include both heroin and prescription painkillers, make up three quarters of Maine’s drug treatment admissions. Non-heroin opiates alone accounted for 3,500 admissions into its drug rehabs in 2010. This is over three times the amount of admissions for both marijuana and cocaine put together.

Due to recent efforts to regulate painkillers and make them harder to obtain, as well as their increasing price, addicts are now turning to heroin. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, heroin is completely illegal and therefore cannot be overcome by law enforcement or regulation.
