Drug Addiction in Maryland

Addicts don’t just live horrible lives. They die horrible deaths. At 14.4 per 100,000 people, Maryland’s severe drug mortality exceeds the national average. In fact, drugs kill more people in Maryland than firearms and car crashes. Most of these deaths are due to heroin and painkillers. A recent batch of Fentanyl-laced heroin, a combination that is 10 to 100 times stronger, has caused the rate of drug-related deaths to increase by the dozens.

Maryland’s largest city, Baltimore, has an especially brutal reputation. With about 60,000 heroin addicts in Baltimore alone, almost 10% of its population is heroin addicts! The problem is not contained to Baltimore, though. In 2010, about 15,000 people sought drug rehab from addiction to heroin and other opiates. This means over 55% of treatment admissions are due to heroin/opiates alone.
