Drug Addiction in New Jersey

Drugs in NJ kill more people than guns or car accidents, and the problem has gotten worse over the years. Between 2010 and 2012, drug mortality grew by 53%. This problem is largely associated with the rise of opiate addiction to painkillers such as OxyContin. Recently, their costliness and efforts to combat medication abuse have led many addicts to turn to a drug that is perhaps even more dangerous: heroin.

Alone, heroin addiction accounts for almost 50% of the reasons people seek drug rehab in NJ. In addition to being extremely addictive and associated with crime and disease, heroin is not regulated because it is illegal. This means it is often “cut” with other drugs such Fentanyl, a particularly strong combination that is 10-100 times stronger and has already caused dozens more deaths in New Jersey.
