Drug Addiction in South Carolina

Marijuana is the most frequently used and abused illicit drug in South Carolina. It accounts for over half of the state’s drug use, as well as its primary admissions into drug rehabs. Cocaine, specifically crack addiction, is also a main area of concern. As with many other states in the South, both meth addiction and production continue to be a problem. Between 2007 and 2009, meth lab seizures increased by 231%.

At 13.2 death per 100,000, South Carolina’s drug-induced death rate exceeds the national average. It also ranks as the 16th highest state in drug mortality, and this is all due to one addiction in particular: opiate addiction. Deaths and overdoses from opiate painkillers alone have actually increased 300% over only a decade.
